Another enjoyable evening's entertainment from the film buffs of the OVFM
Fri 24 Oct: The Chair opened the show with a lively welcome and the evening began with a jokey 2-minute film about the 'risks' in playing golf. Barbara Darby's 11-minute film about the Otford Mosaic, made by Oliver Budd, one of the countries leading Mosaic Artists, was both fascinating and informative. Another member, Barbara Walker, has a sharp eye for the punchline and her two short items - 'Killer Hand' and 'BO advert' - raised much laughter. 'Love and War' (Simon Earwicker) was an endearing interview with two nonagenarians, happily married for 67 years, the husband having been given leave during WWII to return home from Burma for his wedding. | 'Cakes and Onions (John & Ann Epton) showed the 2013 annual allotments open day in Petts Wood, fundraising for St Christopher's Bromley (previously Harris HospisCare) - including the scarecrow competition, won by a 'Bill & Ben' lookalike model. In 'Working with Wood', Derek Allen discovered Alan, an amazing carpenter who takes pieces of solid oak and produces sculptures with moving parts - all within the single piece, without use of glue or pins. From the archives, 'In the Service of Life' was a short documentary about 2 girls from James Allen School in 1955, who visited Peckham Settlement (Staffordshire Street), a charity providing services to the local community, including a nursery for the children of working mothers, meals on wheels, a youth club and an over 75s club. It was part of a national scheme, where schools supported local charitable projects. (Peckham Settlement was founded by the Countess of Wessex in 1896 but went into administration and closed in 2012.) There were several humorous dramas to provide a very varied programme. The evening concluded with an extra unexpected item - 'Memories of Costa Rica' (another Barbara | Darby production of beautifully filmed wildlife) - followed by two amusing items: 'Power Corrupts', starring several club members in a shocking tale of club politics (not the OVFM of course) and 'Tablets of the Memory', with a laughter-invoking punchline about aids for memory loss. |

The film ‘Cakes and Onions’ covers the Homesdale Road Allotments charity event for St Christopher's Bromley (formerly Harris HospisCare). It will now be shown at the OVFM Autumn Show on Friday October 24th (7pm for 7.30pm), re-scheduled from their Spring Show earlier this year, where it had to be dropped at the last minute for technical reasons. It will be accompanied by the usual abundance of comedies and dramas for which this video club has become renowned – together with the promise of films from their extensive archives.
The club has plans for providing free guidance sessions for the general public on getting the best from family videos – whether shot on mobile phones, video or the new DSLR cameras – and saving the results for future generations to enjoy. Further details of these plans will be revealed at the Autumn show.
OVFM film shows always attract large audiences from far and wide, so book your tickets early - a mere £5, including refreshments.
